SPIN

Access & Inclusion ~ Service Design ~ Workforce Development

This project aims to address employment inequities by creating neuro-inclusive career pathways for autistic adults.

Despite over 62 million people worldwide being on the autism spectrum, workplace inclusion remains largely unaddressed. Autistic adults, inclusive of those who are college educated, face disproportionately high unemployment rates. This is driven not by lack of ability but by systemic barriers, limited support after age 22, and persistent social misconceptions. As job competition increases, confidence and access to opportunity are further diminished. This disconnect reveals a critical gap between talent and opportunity, highlighting the need for systems that support job readiness for autistic individuals and workplace readiness for employers.

The Design Intervention

SPIN, short for Spectrum Inclusive Careers, is a system designed to support autistic adults in navigating and sustaining meaningful career pathways. Designed as a social networking service, SPIN intends to be a comfortable, safe and efficient platform to build confidence in autistic job seekers to contribute to the workforce. Its value lies in providing training services to autistic adults as they develop new skills and sharpen their strengths to be a strong contender in hiring practices. With this platform, job seeking individuals on the spectrum have access to trainers for skill development as well as vocational education. These trainers act as a supportive bridge between employers and autistic job seekers.

The value of SPIN lies in its multi-faceted approach, providing a variety of well-rounded services that enhance workplace inclusivity practices. These include:

  • Personal training sessions to understand autistic individuality

  • Aligning work environments with neurodivergent needs to enhance focus and      productivity

  • Inculcating the feeling of confidence and safety through open communication

  • Reduction in workplace uncertainty with social skill and strength training

SPIN begins by supporting autistic adults in the early stages of job readiness, building confidence, clarity and self-advocacy around their skills and strengths. As the process continues to evolve, SPIN also engages employers, shifting their focus from finding a perfect candidate to understanding how diverse skillsets can meaningfully align with workplace needs. By addressing readiness on both sides, SPIN facilitates thoughtful, strengths-based employer-employee matches that are built to last.

Through this approach, SPIN helps autistic job seekers feel values, capable and confident, empowering them to not only secure employment, but to thrive in it.

Beyond Boundaries

Impact

SPIN creates real impact by addressing employment inclusion as a shared responsibility between autistic individuals and employers. By supporting job readiness, confidence-building and strengths articulation for autistic adults; while simultaneously equipping employers with the tools to design neuroinclusive workplaces, SPIN reduces workplace barriers that often limit opportunity and accessibility. The result is more meaningful job matches, improved retention, and workplaces that recognize neurodivergent talent as an asset rather than an accomodation.

Over time, SPIN contributes to a cultural shift in how careers are accessed, supported and eventually sustained, advancing equity through systems designed for inclusion from the start.
